Resolve to End the HIV–AIDS Epidemic .1st DECEMBER is ‘WORLD AIDS DAY’– by Dr. Sunil Chopra.
Fun and adultery can sometimes have devastating repercussions. Illicit, indiscriminate and unprotected sex can make us vulnerable to AIDS. The acronym AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome which is a chronic and serious life-threatening medical disorder caused by HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus).HIV shatters our body’s ability to combat various infections and infirmities by wreaking havoc on our immune system.
HIV/AIDS is a global issue and nations are desperate in search of solutions According to one study there were approximately 38 million people across the globe with HIV/AIDS in 2019.For Example: India has nearly 2.1 million people with HIV and infection varies across the states as well as the urban- rural divide.
The reservoirs of infection are sufferers and carriers. Primarily, a sexually transmitted infection, it can also spread by contact with infected blood from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. The infective stuff could be blood, semen, vaginal secretion and breast milk. Right now neither we have a vaccine nor cure for it. However scientists are working globally to develop one. The symptoms of HIV/AIDS vary depending on the stage of infection.
The ‘WORLD AIDS DAY’which falls on 1st December was first observed in 1988, is indeed an opportunity for people across the globe to come on a common and concrete platform in the war against HIV and to extend a helping hand to those who are currently living with it .
The day’s initiation was the first ever GLOBAL HEALTH DAY too. The importance of the day should alarm to remind doctors, scientists, governments and the mankind that HIV has not vanished away and there is still a desperate need to raise funds, disseminate awareness, fight bias and revamp awareness education.
The day is an occasion to show warmth and solidarity with the millions of people living with HIV in the whole world. Then, to do the same why not wear a HIV AWARENESS RED RIBBON on this day? The same can be easily purchased online or we can make one. There is no shame in wearing the Ribbon Alert. The theme of the 2020 observance is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Resilience and Impact”.
