NATIONAL POLLUTION CONTROL DAY-(2nd December, 2020)
The word ‘Pollution’ has been adapted from the Latin ‘Pollutionem‘ (meaning defilement) and from ‘Pollutus’ which too stands for polluting, soiling, defiling or desecration. Pollution is playing havoc with the lives of millions globally, is no exaggeration. Factually speaking not only India but several other countries are also battling with it.But alas! India has a dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted countries of the World.
Pollution may be defined as the addition of any substance whether solid ,liquid or gas or any form of energy like heat, sound to the environment. Air, noise, water and land pollution are the common types. The environment pollution can be lethal for our health and hence should be tackled on war-footing (at times the air of Delhi becomes so bad that people have to gasp and visibility gets considerably decreased).Pollution is not only caused by vehicles, factories, deforestation, blasts, leakage of gases but also by burning of crackers as well as stubble burning by farmers.
‘NATIONAL POLLUTION CONTROL DAY’ ( NPCD) is celebrated every year on 2nd December in order to commemorate and pay rich tribute to thousands of people who died in BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY(the worst gas tragedy in the world so far ) on night of December 2–3,1984.The disaster took the lives of more than 4000 people (Official figures) and rendered innumerable crippled, of whom many a died in subsequent months.
The main objective of NPCD is to spread awareness amongst masses the hazards of pollution. The unwanted and excessive PARTICULATE MATTER and poor AIR QUALITY INDEX is not only dangerous for the the nature, surroundings but obviously our health. The AQI below 50 symbolizes good air and as it increases the risk to our health also surges.Dust, pollens, soot, smoke and droplet particles are termed as pollutants. To eliminate pollutants and lessen air pollution in the country the public at large will have to cooperate and collaborate with the administration quite wholeheartedly. It is high time all of us realise that laws alone can not bring the desired results. We should stop moving in cars to give ourselves air, stop burning crackers, wood ,educate farmers to refrain from stubble burning at all costs and indulge in car pooling. Switching to CNG can help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Let us all awaken to this growing menace.
