WHERE ARE THE SPARROWS NOW ? —By Prof. Ashok Kapoor

(From the Desk of Prof. Ashok Kapoor )

WHERE ARE THE SPARROWS NOW ?

Concrete jungles, choked with soaring skyscrapers,

drenched in smoke and smog,

frown upon the remnants,

of sylvan shade,

the only refuge left ,

for the hapless warblers,

struggling for survival,

in this reckless plunder of Nature.

The green spots of Arcadia,

are shriveling up fast,

to satiate our lust for lucre.

Are we not strangulating

flora and fauna

to ride rough shod upon

our rivals to flaunt feathers in our caps?

Where are the sparrows?

Where are they now?

Gone are the days

when they were frequent visitors,

hovering round in our homes,

well rooted in our community wellbeing.

Gone are the days

when constant twitter would fall

on our ears like a crooning symphony,

chasing away the last oozing of our slumber,

nestling in the twilight of the sun rise.

Our dear house sparrows

retreated in the hinterlands

of our burgeoning cities,

scouting for shelters,

scattered in the vanishing remnants

of depleted forests.

The clinking and clanging of machines,

the mad rush of hellish traffic,

smeared with soot,

honking and blaring,

and our much vaunted flashing gadgets

have scared  our beloved winged angels,

to fend for themselves,

leaving us in the shallows

of our illusory glitter and gloss.
