BESTOWING DIVINE STATUS UPON THE DOCTORS ONCE AGAIN (NATIONAL DOCTORS’ DAY 1st July)
— By Dr.Sunil Chopra
‘THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF MEDICINE IS LOVE’.
No cure can initiate without the presence of a qualified doctor. Factually speaking modern research and rapid advances in medicine during past decades have drastically changed the portrayal of a doctor the world over.
Till the beginning of Covid 19 pandemic the doctors were considered MESSIAHS. Some people have become skeptical now. Although doctors will invariably be indispensable, but this should not go to their heads. In the absence of patients a physician stands nowhere.
‘THE PATIENT IS THE CENTRE OF THE MEDICAL UNIVERSE AROUND WHICH ALL OUR WORKS REVOLVE AND TOWARDS WHICH ALL OUR EFFORTS TREND. — J.B.MURPHY
It is a matter of great Shame and sorrow that incidents of violence against doctors in Indian subcontinent are witnessing a considerable surge in last few years. The safety of health workers is indeed a serious issue and formulation of appropriate legal provisions and standards to ensure their safety as well as security is the dire need of the hour.
The NATIONAL DOCTORS’ DAY is observed on Ist July in India in the memory of the iconic and internationally renowned medical practitioner , Dr.B.C.Roy (born on 1st July 1882 and who left for his heavenly abode on the same very date in 1962 ) . He not only served as a freedom fighter, an educationist, a politician but above all as a physician. When the world is still struggling with the Covid pandemic, there is perhaps no better time to remember this great Indian doctor.
The day recognizes the significance of the contributions of physicians to individuals and communities.
The theme for this year is ‘BUILDING THE FUTURE WITH FAMILY DOCTORS’. On this auspicious day all and sundry should strive hard to bestow divine status upon doctors once again.
To resuscitate the glory, all doctors should be humane, go for purity, honesty, humility, truth as well as hard-work and leave no stone upturned to remain updated .
“SUCCESS IS NOT THE KEY TO HAPPINESS,IT IS VICE VERSA.IF YOU LOVE WHAT YOU ARE DOING,YOU WILL INDEED BE VICTORIOUS”.

Doctors are indeed the last recourse for a distressed patient, just like one turns to God. Therefore, the use of the term “divine” for them is not an exaggeration. One often comes across an inscription in clinics stating, “I treat, He cures”. Both, the Almighty and the doctor complement each other.
However, as a direct consequence of the involvement of huge Corporates in the medical field (or, more aptly Industry), the profession has lost a lot of credibility. People have now begun to view doctors with scepticism. This perception is not ill founded and is based on the fact that some unethical doctors pocket heavy commissions (in cash or kind) while prescribing diagnostic tests or medicines.
To regain this lost glory, doctors need to rework on their priorities. They need to judge the difference between respect and ill begotten wealth.
The pandemic has shown how doctors rose to the challenge at the risk of their lives and the lives of their families. Many lives were saved due to such untiring dedication. May they, and theirs, remain blessed always.
Thank you.Mr.Desor for your detailed and correct comments. You have so precisely analysed the things.
Medical fraternity is the pivot of health care in the society. Though doctors are doing all they can but there is a need to recognize their efforts. In this pandemic they have been worst sufferers being the front liners. If our society needs dedicated doctors then we all must give them due respect and security. Their duty hours have no limits. We must salute these super humans I. E doctors on this day.
Thanks to Dr Chopra for this enlightening article on Doctor’s day
Doctor’s Day
Medical professionals ( Doctors) are an important part of human life. There are tons of medical ailments and getting complex day by day. Doctors do their job to the best of their knowledge. As a professional, it has great value in society to a limited extent. People think this is a purely business nowadays and on the contrary, some professionals do indulge in it. We can’t maintain a country’s health department without medical professionals.
One can have good personal satisfactory life with a limited scope of growth. Great views and well explained by Dr.Sunil Chopra.

Sparing some moments from your busy schedule you have precisely touched some very vital points in your overseas comments.
Happy Doctor’s Day
Happy Doctors Day
HAPPY DOCTORS DAY
Dear Dr. Chopra you are very much clear in expressing your opinion regarding doctors of modern day d about medical profession.
But practically society expects much more from a medico. Governments treat them as a strict professionals taxing heavily more than even a business man. To qualify for the profession medical institutes demand a bigger sum of fees with large capitation fees. After paying so much through their nose. They have to put hard work in studies. To pool all the education to gather one attains the age of more than 35 to 40 years of age. It usually take more than 10 years to get a name in the field nd than he has to follow quacks for referral.
Days of becoming a dignified doctor had gone the past when people use to worship doctors. Now it is the process of demand nd supply
Very well written article.
But gone are the days of divine status. In this materialistic world, now the patient thinks that i have paid for this and should get cured. This thinking leads to violence against health professionals. There are laws to curb this tendency but implementation is very poor. More over the fellow who suffers or witnesses such crime can never be normal while treating a patient.
Doctors had great respect, & they do have the same today, though with a !! ?.
In remote areas/villages, the nearest town had a very popular/known Dr who was ultimate, nothing above him.He would suggest the final course ie , the patient to be taken to Rajindra Patiala, Miss Brown (CMC) Ldh. or to Bikaner. Such Dr’s were part of the family as were Arhtiyas(with due regard).
With time, health system deteriorated & so did the health at large, & Dr’s/clinics/hospitals mushroomed & with that the skepticism.
Covid 19 did the ultimate. I am out for an evening walk in my colony. It’s a large area. On reading this article, I was surprised to recollect that a school building coming up stopped construction, as the party might have thought of the sorrow state of schools & Edu. System. But clinics/hospitals are coming up. A rented shop in the name of a clinic 2 years ago & now a huge kothi/mansion as a clinic. And so many along my evening walk area. It is good for us to go to a good facility, but how come such huge change in a short while. I am with Dr’s, I have family friends & just can not put in words the respect we have carried on to the third generation.
It’s true, Doctors rose to the challenge at the risk of their lives, they learned from the challenge & saved many a lives.
Kind Regards to the Doctors fraternity.
Thank you so much Sandhu ji for sparing time to go through my blog. You have called a spade a spade in your detailed comments.l
It’s a rarest situation when the enemy virus is changing it’s shape & Looks on daily basis.
it’s very difficult to take decisions in such situations and the results too are good sometimes and bas many times.
Disease management moodalities are an ever changing reality…….Inj remidesvir/ tociluzimab worked well last time but miserably failed in second wave……
3rd wave too may have many surprises for us……
But we will keep our clinical judgement intact and treat as per our capabilities. Hope this 14day disease period will be over without much harm to the host.
