IS APPEARANCE REALITY ?  

Is life a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged ?

Does it move in a linear fashion ?

Is it a sequential order of events in a chronological order?

On the face of it , it may seem so but it is not if perceived keenly while gauging its subtleties
of layers crisscrossing into a myriad shaped fabric .

The surrealists expound the bizarre medley of dream and reality , fact and fiction , the conscious and unconscious, fantasies and stark actualities coalescing into an odd pattern which may not bear resemblance to the two dimensional reality that we call life .

There are multiple dimensions as the advocates of String Theory of Quantum Physics argue implying that life is not so simple as it seems . Does it mean that appearance is not reality ? If it were so , then life would have been a straight line in a linear fashion . But if observed with a sharp eye , life tends to become an odd pattern and the incredible dimension of dreams , fantasies , cryptic reveries made up of memories and images , light and shade , the conscious and the unconscious mingle into one another, forming an odd , strange and irrational pattern , will assume prominence .

In nutshell, life is mystery revolving round dreams and fantasies morphing into the deceptive external format. It will be quite appropriate to quote Prospero ‘ s remark in W . Shakespeare’s play The Tempest :

We are such stuff ,
as dreams are made on ,
and our little life is rounded with a sleep .

This sums up the strange mystery of life that appearance is not reality .

Prof. Ashok Kapoor is an alumnus (1960s) of Govt. College, Ludhiana (India). He has also taught English literature to Post Graduate classes. After his retirement from college principalship, he  has engaged himself in writing poetry and  thought provoking literary blogs which fascinate every lover of literature.
