WHEN IT CAME TO THE CHOICE OF A JOB AND A LIFE PARTNER FOR A DAUGHTER-ASHOK SHARMA*
(* An Alumnus of SCD Govt. College Ludhiana speaks bold about her daughter)
Today is 45th birth day of my eldest daughter, Aarti Sharma & as I sit all alone on the terrace of our house,I am led by the rush of thoughts to write few lines about her.
To the parents, their children are special & Aarti is special in more than one way. Right from her childhood days, she has displayed her own way of thinking & taking decisions.
Being a bit conservative parent, I had my own way of bringing up a girl child in the Indian traditions but today when i look at her eventual growth, she has given me few lessons.
Right from her years in Norway( when she was just 9 years of age) , she made her way to British school & thereafter Norwegian school & surprised us by picking up the native language & English so fast & inspite of many odds , she assimilated the western way of living & blended it so well with Indian ethos.
On her return to India in 1987, she chose to join Punjab university contrary to my advice did well in MA (English) . At every step , she wanted to have her way . She chose a night shift it job in Chandigarh, & learnt to drive to reach her destination to our anxiety but again learnt the tricks of trade. I wanted her to join teaching job but she preferred it field & did well both in India & abroad (England & Singapore).
When it came to the choice of a life partner, she defied us and married a boy of her own choice & that too out of caste & through internet & look, she is leading a wonderful life with her hubby in Singapore.
She is a wonderful social being & has lot of good friends belonging to many nationalities.
She is every inch a rebel & a woman of substance & gradually I have come to terms with her style of thinking & living. There is lot more to write but I restrict myself. I have learnt a lot from her.
I Wish Her All Well In Her Life.
