AGRO DIVERSIFICATION : PAU  BATS FOR ORGANIC TURMERIC CULTIVATION IN PUNJAB,SCIENTISTS HAVE RAPPORT WITH FARMERS IN FIELDS

The School of Organic Farming, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a field day on “Production and Processing of Turmeric” at the field of Sardar Tarsem Singh, village Neela Naloya, district Hoshiarpur. This programme was sponsored by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Calicut, Kerala. About 30 farmers participated in the programme.

Dr Rajender Kumar, Senior Agronomist and Principal Investigator of the programme, provided information on the cultivation of turmeric. He further discussed the importance of turmeric and its increasing consumption due to several health benefits. He advised farmers to grow turmeric at least to meet their domestic requirements.

Dr Tarsem Chand Mittal, Senior Extension Engineer, shared techniques for the processing of turmeric.

Dr Gurpartap Singh, District Extension Specialist (Agronomy), Farm Advisory Service Centre, Hoshiarpur informed the participants about the scope of turmeric in district Hoshiarpur.

Dr Manisha Thakur, Olericulturist, apprised the farmers of organic certification of turmeric for higher benefits. The turmeric seed (rhizomes) was also distributed among the farmers to encourage them to opt for cultivation of turmeric.
