Alumni of local college take pride and congratulate Prof Dr Mrs. Rajinder Jeet Hans Gill who has been especially chosen by Punjab University, Chandigarh to be honored with PU Ratna Award on it’s 72nd Convocation on March 12,2025. She is prominently one among other awardees.
Detailing about her career journey Brij Bhushan Goyal, Org secretary Alumni Association and A Sr, Alumni Prof.Dr Tara Singh Kamal inform about her phenomenal career path.
She was born in village Mohie in District Ludhiana in 1943 with her schooling in Kumkalan and Issury village schools. Her father was a government doctor, so later she attended some schools in Hoshiarpur districts. She matriculated from District Board School Gujjarwal in Ludhiana. She did her BA from Government College for Women at Ludhiana and then came to Govt College Ludhiana in early 1960s. Her professors here like of Prof K.R. Chaudhary, Manohar Singh, Bhagat Singh, B.S. Lali and O.P. Bagai had a great positive influence inspiration for her further research. . It is recollected that she obtained 392 marks out of 400 in her PG examination and the then dignitary conferring degrees then in the college at the convocation pointed that perhaps eight marks deduction was because of her using more paper sheets for working sums. Thereafter, her teachers recommended her to do research with eminent mathematician of Punjab University Prof. Dr Bambha. Dr Rajinder Jeet was one among three students chosen to accompany him to go to Ohio State University (OSU) along with Dr. Bambah when she completed her PhD there in 1965 and then came back to join Panjab University Chandigarh as a professor in Mathematics. Keeping in view her scholarly brilliance the university has decided to honor with PU Ratan Award on March,12,2025.
Here in Ludhiana, Dr Satya Rani Head of the Mathematics Department ( Also Aluma) currently says proudly that they have already befittingly put up a picture of hers in the department to inspire students. Dr Gursharan Singh Sandhu another Alumni and senior teacher of the department here said that they feel very proud that our college Aluma will be honored. Both said that Dr Rajinder Jeet is mathematics genius. Principal Suman Lata said her recognition enhanced this college prestige. Dr Kamal Kishore recalled the days when she visited college last in 2016. Other who congratulated her are Prof Geetanjli, Mrs Harinder Kaur Brar (PCS ) Retd . Prof P K Sharma, Narinder S. Mason , Baldev Singh , Gurjinder Singh, K B Singh , all senior alumni of the college.
This college at Ludhiana has provided hundreds of brilliant mathematic teachers in the region ever since PG mathematics classes in co-education were begun in Ludhiana in joint Punjab times after 1947.
Dr Rajinder Jeet Hans Gill has already received national awards- Narasinga Rao Medal (1971), Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences Bangalore (1982), National Academy of Sciences Allahabad (1998), Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS)(2006), Vice-President of INSA Council (2004-2005) and the prestigious Srinivasa Ramanujan Birth Centenary Gold Medal by ISCA in 2010. She has been Dean University Instruction of Panjab University Chandigarh in 2002-2004 as informed by the Alumni Association.
