Trilateralism Plays Hide and Seek Amidst Fragile Vows- Does not Transborder Terrorism remain a haunting world conundrum even today?—By Prof. P K Sharma

( Prof. P K Sharma )

Is it not calling a spade a spade, a brick a brick narrating the story of an errant past of over a decade or so of India’ s “powers that be”, be it September 18, 2016 Uri assault on army men with 16 martyred  then much drum beaten surgical strikes, February 14, 2019 Pulwama -40 CRPF men killings in suicide bomb attack followed by Balakot air strikes and recent April, 22 Basiran in Pahalgam terror bloodshed of 26 innocent tourists with ultimate May 7 wee hours air strikes at nine terror bred outfits in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir ?

Ironically, the valiant defence forces of India did make amends for those at the helm of affairs of the nation faltering and found wanting badly in coming to the rescue promptly of the unfortunate 26 tourists who fell to the bullets of terrorists, the polity leaving ground open and free for the assailants to come, shoot with impunity and run scot free. The one blessing in disguise did emerge on the Indian scene following the Pahalgam killings that entire nation stood united like a rock to meet any challenge and eventuality.

In the light of Uri, Pulwama, now Pahalgam mayhems, should not we learn many lessons that “prevention is better than cure” and “self -defence is the best offence”? Should not we learn the art of late, how to defend our territories and borders vigilantly instead of going in for follow up of brandishing and bragging adventurisms?

Those at the top have not come and lived upto the expectations of the populace of the nation. Prime Minister Modi chose to shy away from presiding over  the significant all-party meeting not once but twice.

Quite queer it is that bilateralism has indeed  paved way for trilateralism as US President Donald Trump first wrote on his X account congratulating India and Pakistan for ceasefire in wake of common sense and intelligence prevailing on both the nations as if earlier on they were inviting these adventurous troubles all these days without “common sense and intelligence “and it were only all Trump’s efforts that showered common sense and intelligence miraculously upon the two nuclear strong neighbours. However, this trilateralism exercise had to eat a humble pie too elsewhere in case of four warring forces of Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine so far.

Trilateral factor did play hide and seek in form of US President Donald Trump hither and thither with his interventions, but somewhere meeting with success partially.

Many questions on India’ s sovereignty and democracy too spring up. The NDA dispensation at Centre was offered unconditional support by the Opposition in these grim and sensitive phases but it did not deem it proper to take the INDIA bloc and opposition into confidence while deciding to declare ceasefire on borders but preferred to dance to the tunes of USA supremo Trump. Opposition in these times of trial and tribulations did play a remarkable role but the Modi regime did disappoint the nation with lapses too many evading its duties and responsibilities with impunity. Should “We the people of India……” feel rest assured once for all even in wake of the fragile vows of adhering to ceasefire that the twin  spectres of trans-border terrorism and insurgency stand eradicated from territories of apostle of non-violence India? Still, Pakistan worth the Pak to believe and rely upon or not is million dollar a question?
