About Basketball

James Naismith

Today 21 December we celebrate the 129th anniversary of Basketball, which began as a game drawn up by the venerable James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor.James Naismith ,then thought to keep the boys of the Massachusetts chapter of the YMCA engaged in the approaching winter in sporting activities so that boys don’t become inert due to low physical activity. He invented this innovative sport.

With such humble origins, basketball has now grown over a century-and-a –quarter of existence into the second most popular game in the world, a sport which is followed globally by over a billion and a half people.

From its safe start the game attracted the enthusiastic attention of young men everywhere. The sport was recognised by the International Olympic Committee, in 1930.

In 1932 the International Basketball Federation was founded in Geneva. And to this day, the admirations of fans and the devotion of players, both current and past, fuel the growth of the game.Basketball is now played in newer and newer corners of the globe, inspiring youngsters everywhere.
